Everything in our world evolved from common origins. Travelling upwards from particles, hydrogen the simplest atom is formed; hydrogen atoms marshaled by gravity become a star. Stars manufacture other atoms that organise to make proteins and then cells. All of life follows: including ginkgo trees and people, then teacups and rocket pencils.
Each new thing has potential to affect things already existing and what might come after. It is a picture of potential, contingency and emergence.
Exactly fifty years ago, Louise and Alexander Calder published this artwork in the New York Times. It is striking in its message which seems more poignant than ever
